Coco Gauff’s winning run comes to an end at Wimbledon
Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon fairytale came to an end yesterday as she was beaten by Simona Halep in straight sets.
The 15-year-old, conqueror of Venus Williams, Magdalena Rybarikova and Polona Hercog, went down 6-3 6-3 in SW19, bringing an end to what she described as the “best week of my life.”
In yesterday’s encounter against the former world number one, Gauff was unable to reproduce the form which enabled her to overcome her previous three opponents and, at one point, was even forced to call a doctor on court.
However, the defeat couldn’t dampen her spirits as she reflected on her achievements over the course of the past week.
"I wasn't feeling very well but I still played my best. I'm not sure what it was but I still had fun even though I was losing," she said.
"I learned a lot about how to play in front of a big crowd and how to play under pressure. I am really grateful for the experience."
Elsewhere in the women’s singles, world number one Ashleigh Barty was eliminated after losing against Alison Riske, despite winning the first set.
In the men’s singles, meanwhile, the three biggest names in the competition – Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic – all eased into the quarter-finals with comfortable victories.
