Andy Murray and Serena Williams beaten at Wimbledon
Andy Murray and Serena Williams crashed out of the mixed doubles at Wimbledon after being beaten by top seeds Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar.
The big-name duo lost the first set, before responding well to take a tight second, but the top increased the tempo to run away with the third, eventually winning 6-3 4-6 6-2.
Williams still has a shot at glory as she remains in the women’s singles competition, but for Murray, the defeat brought an end to his involvement in this year’s tournament.
"I think I achieved a lot,” he said, following a torrid time with injuries.
"I got on the court and considering the lack of matches, I did OK. The most positive thing is that my body felt good."
Elsewhere, Roberto Bautista Agut set up a semi-final showdown against Novak Djokovic after beating Guido Pella in four sets.
The Spaniard, who was due to be in Ibiza on his stag-do right now, won 7-5 6-4 3-6 6-3, and in the other men’s semi-final Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, two all-time greats, will go head-to-head in their first meeting at the tournament since the 2008 final, one of the sport’s most epic contests.
