Friendly wins for Manchester United and Chelsea
There were comfortable wins for the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea as preparations for the new Premier League campaign continued over the weekend.
Man United, currently on tour in Australia, began their trip with a 2-0 win over Perth Glory at the Optus Stadium.
Second-half goals from Marcus Rashford and James Garner ensured it was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side who came out on top, with new signings Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both featuring.
Paul Pogba, who has been linked with a move away from the club, provided the pass for Rashford to open the scoring while Romelu Lukaku another player who has been the subject of transfer speculation, missed the game through injury.
The Red Devils are back in action on Wednesday when they face Leeds United, with that game also taking place in Perth.
Elsewhere, Chelsea secured their first win of the Frank Lampard era as the Blues thumped St Patrick’s 4-0 in Dublin.
The Europa League winners fielded a different 11 in each half, and in the first it was Mason Mount, who played under Lampard while on loan at Derby last season, who shone.
The youngster broke the deadlock with a smart finish after latching onto a Mateo Kovacic pass, and his all-round play caught the eye.
Emerson Palmieri made it 2-0 with a low drive and Olivier Giroud, who came on for the second half, added a brace to complete the scoring.
