Terrifying ‘cracked glass’ bridge makes you think you’re about to fall

If you have a fear of heights, the walkway over the Taihang mountain range in China will terrify you.

Even if you don’t have a fear of heights, the walkway over the Taihang mountain range in China will terrify you. In fact, it will likely have enough of an impact to give you a fresh fear of heights.

The walkway, in the Hebei province, is transparent, allowing you to check out the ground below – or not, if you’re not a fan of seeing exactly where they’ll find your body if you fall and die.

There’s only one thing more terrifying than a see-through walkway above a sheer drop, and that’s a see-through walkway where the glass appears to crack under your weight. Especially when cracked bridges are a real, genuine hazard these days.

But no one would be sadistic enough to introduce that kind of effect, right? Surely…

The walkway seems pretty terrifying at the best of times, and we’re struggling to see the appeal of being able to see the 1,180m drop below.

However, it is made even worse by the appearance of cracked glass, especially if you didn’t know what to expect.

The man in the video below either doesn’t know about it – in which case it feels like someone if playing a cruel trick on him – or he does know, in which case he is playing what might be an even crueller trick on those behind him.

There has been an apparent apology from those behind the design, seeming to confirm it is indeed a deliberate effect and not – as some had first thought – the glass beginning to crack in the heat.

It may be the preferable of the two options, but some have expressed concerns at the potential for the design to put those crossing the bridge at risk of a heart attack.

That isn’t enough for the effect to be removed, however, as people are being encouraged to take in what – in fairness – is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We’re not convinced. At all.
