UAE mountain to get world’s longest zip line
When it comes to world records, Dubai usually leads the way. But this time, it’s neighbouring emirate Ras Al Khaimah that’s striving for a global title. Home to the highest mountain in the UAE, Jabal Jais, Ras Al Khaimah’s views are renowned, and now there are plans in place to add a more thrilling way to experience them – while travelling down the world’s longest zip line.
According to reports there are plans in place for a zip line and a via ferrata (a climbing path along the rock face). Haitham Mattar, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority told Emirates 24/7 that this phase of the project is due to open soon. We have decided as a tourism authority to adopt three sites on the mountain. The first site will open by end of April and will be via ferrata with a zip line included,” he said. “But we will have another zip line which will be 2.6 kilometres, making it the longest in the world.”
Currently, the world’s longest zip line is in South Africa, which is two kilometres in length, allowing thrill-seekers to reach speeds of 120 kilometres.
This is just one element of plans to make Jabal Jais more tourist-friendly. There will also be a five-star camp, and a third area with a viewing deck complete with space for a picnic area overlooking the sea.
Ras Al Khaimah has seen its tourism industry grow significantly over the last few years, and there are plans in place to increase it further. The development on Jabal Jais is hoped to make the spectacular mountain ranges in Ras Al Khaimah better equipped for tourists. This is all part of a wider plan to introduce more attractions and events to the emirate.
To be honest, they had us at ‘world’s longest zip line’.
