Captain America: Civil War (15)
Brands, franchises, products… it’s where we are in Hollywood right now. This week, Captain America and Iron Man enter a ring recently vacated by Superman and Batman, although Marvel’s superhero duel is lighter, funnier and generally more self-aware its DC rival. Here, we see the whole Avengers crew split into two camps and an ensemble cast – Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd – join Evans and Downey Jr in major CGI mayhem.
In cinemas from May 5
Where To Invade Next (PG15)
We in the Middle East have reason to wince when an American starts talking about invasions. But Michael Moore’s latest, and perhaps best, documentary has a more benign intent. In typical gung-ho style, Moore travels around Europe to discover what its nations do better than his own, finding that many are enjoying a better standard of living. From Italy’s five months maternity leave to Slovenia’s free tertiary education, the message is crystal clear: his country can do better.
In select Vox cinemas from May 5

Top Cat Begins (PG)
This will moisten the eyes of people of a certain age. The classic (and oft-repeated) early 1960s cartoon by Hanna-Barbera, essentially a reworking of the sitcom The Phil Silvers Show (Sergeant Bilko) from the same period, was a cult classic. Now with a new animation upgrade, the story charts how Top Cat met his long-time sidekick, Benny. It might lack some of the original’s charm, but there are laughs a-plenty.

Hepta (PG)
This Egyptian movie follows four separate love stories, each of which charts the different stages of love as outlined by psychologist, Dr Shukri Mokhtar in his last ever lecture. Renowned for giving direct, straightforward answers – a modern-day William of Occam, if you will – to the simplest questions, Dr Mokhtar finally asks, “how do we love?” and proceeds to try and tell us. Nelly Karim and Yasmin Raeis are drafted in to help. Based on a book by Mohamed Sadek.

The Man Who Knew Infinity (15)
The inviting duo of Dev Patel and, fresh from Batman duties, Jeremy Irons tells the story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a young Indian mathematician who stunned the academic world when he enrolled at Cambridge University at the beginning of the 20th century. With his startling mental aptitude gradually honed by a kind-hearted professor (Irons), Ramunujan battles to showcase his luminary prowess to an antiquated – and often prejudiced – peer group.

Bastille Day (18)
Idris Elba goes full-blown super-agent on the trail of Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden, whose pickpocket has turned into an unwitting terrorism accessory. The plot unfolds in a Paris neighbourhood, with Madden’s misguided but good-natured thief pinching a bag that contains something far more sinister than a laptop and wallet. The CIA’s Richard Mason (Elba) then unravels a chilling criminal conspiracy that goes to the heart of the police force. This is high-octane escapism bolstered, as ever, by the presence of Big Dris.
