Climate Ambassadors Host The First Batch Of UAE’s University Students

The Climate Ambassadors program (CAP), which was held last Saturday, was a success, with 30 students from major colleges across the country participating.

The event happened on the 15th of April Saturday, where they discussed several issues related to climate change and particularly ways to decrease carbon and greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

CAP program was brought to life with the conjoined effort of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the Expo Schools Program, where the students from schools and universities in the United Arab Emirates were given a chance to act as climate negotiators who are partaking in this year’s COP28. There will be many more such vibrant and informative sessions until November 2023.

This event is part of a series of CAP sessions being held at Expo City Dubai. Students from several universities in UAE like the American University of Sharjah(AUS), Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Zayed University, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYU), and the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) took part in this event.

Assistant Under-Secretary for Sustainable Communities and Acting Assistant Under-Secretary for Green Development and Climate Change at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), Mr. Essa Al Hashmi said that the Climate Ambassadors Program mirrors their commitment to including students and youth in the climate action system by acquainting them with the extent of global difficulties to climate change and leveraging their capabilities and ideas to find a solution to these challenges.

In addition to that, he also added that the program aims at creating a new generation that believes in the significance of being able to take decisive actions and not neglect the impacts that climate change has on this planet.

He addressed that this program aims to have such an effect on the students so that they can lead international, governmental, and societal efforts to make people aware of the biggest challenge in the history of humankind. Mr. Al Hashmi also expressed his happiness in welcoming the first group of university students to the Program and is anticipating more productive sessions with other students until COP28 in the UAE later this year. 

This CAP session was illuminating with a lot of stimulating conversation among the referred university students in the sectors of carbon and greenhouse gas emissions and their effect on global warming, as well as the increase in the deathly and destructive environmental disasters and threats to biodiversity and living beings, and the adverse impacts on human health and the economy.

In addition to that, they also discussed the negative impacts on food and water security in different parts of the globe.

CAP gives students a chance to participate in a climate ambassador negotiation session. In this session, students roleplayed as ambassadors from a specific country and learned about the impact of climate change in that country.

Then they collaborated with ambassadors from other nations to come up with creative solutions to face the climate change crisis and develop an effective action plan to achieve them, and at the end negotiate and reach a conclusion that both parties could approve of.
