UAE President Meets Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska, Pledges $4 Million in Assistance

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi met with Her Excellency Olena Zelenska, Ukraine’s First Lady, and wife of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian First Lady is currently in the United Arab Emirates. She is here to participate in the Forbes 30/50 Summit scheduled to happen in the emirate of Abu Dhabi between March 07, 2023, and March 10, 2023.

During the meeting, the UAE President also pledged financial aid worth $4 million to the Olena Zelenska Foundation, of which the Ukrainian First Lady is the Chairwoman. The foundation is currently active in Ukraine helping the people that are affected by the ongoing war. Activities conducted by the foundation currently include providing war survivors with the necessary treatment, reconstruction of schools, and similar facilities that were torn down during attacks, as well as providing aid to orphanages and families that take care of adopted children.

The financial aid announced by the UAE President will be utilized to construct orphanages to help relocate and provide assistance to children that are affected by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The financial assistance will be put to use to construct 10 orphanage buildings that will be able to accommodate 100 children.

The meeting between Sheikh Mohamed and Zelenska took place in the Qasr Al Bahr majlis in Abu Dhabi. During the meeting, the UAE President was briefed about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and how the chain of events is affecting children in the country in particular.

During the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed took the opportunity to reiterate the commitment of the United Arab Emirates to help the Ukrainian people throughout the ongoing crisis, while at the same time bringing both regional and international consideration and efforts that can help bring political stability back between Russia and Ukraine and thus reinforce peace and stability in the region that is currently torn by war.

Zelenska took the opportunity of meeting the UAE President to thank the leader for his continuous and timely support for the people of Ukraine throughout the war crisis, as well as the position taken by the United Arab Emirates to assist the refugees from Ukraine that are currently residing in neighbouring countries. During her ongoing visit to the United Arab Emirates, Zelenska also took time to meet with the Ukrainian community members currently living in the UAE.

The UAE has been actively involved in helping the Ukrainian people to regain their lives from the ongoing war. Since the beginning of the war, the United Arab Emirates has sent several humanitarian and financial aid to Ukraine.

Recently, the UAE donated 2,500 generators for household use to Ukraine, as the war had damaged critical infrastructure in the country including power plants, thus leaving homes without any form of electricity. Each of the generators donated by the UAE is capable of producing power output between 3.5 kilowatts and 8 kilowatts.

Also, late last year, the UAE President announced provisioning $100 million as humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. Additionally, planes carrying aid were also sent to Poland and Moldova, which are neighboring countries of Ukraine that have seen a large number of Ukrainian refugees come in as a result of the war.

Even with the world trying to de-escalate the war situation and bring peace into the region, the Russian attack on Ukraine has been ongoing, with the latest reports being of attacks on Thursday early morning hitting the Black Sea port city of Odesa, Kyiv, and Kharkiv.

The missile strikes that hit these areas have also reportedly disconnected the power supply to several areas. According to Vitalii Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, the latest strikes in the city have severely impacted a nearby power facility, thus leaving over 40 percent of the city’s residents without any form of heating, while the outside temperature hovers around the 4-degree Celsius mark.

The meeting held at the Qasr Al Bahr palace was also attended by Marian bint Mohammed Almheiri, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment; as well as Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The Forbes 30/50 Summit, for which Olena Zelenska is in the UAE capital currently, is expected to bring together some of the most powerful and influential women from all over the world. Coinciding with International Women’s Day, the summit will have young achievers as well as icons and legends in their respective fields, which will make the summit one of the greatest global events for women in history.
