Dubai Metro Carried Over 2 Billion People Since Its Opening

The Dubai Metro has surpassed 2 billion riders since the metro opened in 2009, September 9th. The announcement was made by the Road and Transports Authority (RTA), today 24th April 2023.

The Metro’s Red Line which runs from Rashidya in the East to Jebel Ali in the West, parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road has transported 1.342 billion commuters.

The Green Line sets its motion through Deira and Bur Dubai, parallel to the Dubai Creek, which has served over 673.531 million passengers.

Impeccable standards and effective service of the Metro were praised by Sheikh Mohammed

Dubai Metro has managed to keep up with impeccable standards for the punctuality of the services with an almost perfect rate of 99.7%, exceeding international safety standards and displaying exceptional operational services.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has praised RTA for its efforts in developing and executing standard projects that aid the mobility needs of the community. 

The ruler of Dubai and the Vice-President of the United Arab Emirates took this opportunity to stress the positive role of the Dubia metro as a sustainable and environment-friendly option for conveyance.

The ruler of Dubai added that the Dubai Metro is an integral project that caters to the public and also a mirroring of Dubai’s eagerness to implement environment-friendly and sustainable traveling solutions, a project that is good for both the public and the environment.

He ended with a note of promise that the Emirate of Dubai will continue to create highly effective and reliable means of transportation, to ensure ease and safe mobility and boost the Emirate’s overall development goals.

The Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, Road and Transports Authority, Mattar Al Tayer revealed the statistics of the excellent growth that the Dubai Metro has achieved over the years since its opening.

The initial 4 months of services were served to 6.089 million riders which soared by 38.089 million in 2010 and 69.007 million by 2011. The year 2012 soo an amazing surge of 58% by the previous year. Since then it has been steady progress exceeding a billion riders by the end of 2017.

There was a minor setback since the onset of corona and the pandemic lockdown. But as life returned to normal routines, the metro served over 113 million riders.

It was in the year 2022 that the Dubai Metro set a new record for the highest number of riders since its launch clocking at 225.142 million riders, a praise-worthy growth rate of nearly 49%.

Mr. Al Tayer added that the total number of users since the inauguration of the metro has surpassed 2 billion riders through January 2023.

Various factors contributed to this impressive growth of Dubai Metro’s ridership. The opening of new stations as part of the Route 2020 project, and the productive measures that were taken to make sure of a quick recovery from the adversities that came up due to Covid 19 pandemic.

The successful coordination of the RTA departments and the Rail agency has contributed to the hosting of important international events and exhibitions like the Dubai Expo 2022, Gulf Food, The Big 5, etc.

This remarkable feat achieved by the Dubai Metro and its steady growth and success proves the authority’s commitment to providing safe and reliable transport solutions to commuters.
