1 Million Trips On Shared E-scooters In Dubai 2022

According to the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, shared electric scooters were used for approximately 1 million trips in Dubai in 2022, which is more than double the figure recorded in 2021, with no fatalities or serious injuries reported.

According to the authority, e-scooters are an excellent mode of transportation for short trips as well as first- and last-mile journeys. Over 557,000 riders used the service, and the satisfaction rating was 76%, slightly lower than 79% in 2021.

The RTA’s efforts to expand infrastructure at e-scooter operation zones announced earlier this year contributed to the success of the initial phase of shared e-scooters.

To connect attraction points and high-demand spots such as public transportation stations and entertainment areas such as Jumeirah Beach, dedicated e-scooter lanes with high safety and quality standards were created.

RTA approves the use of e-scooters in 11 new residential areas, increasing the total number of permitted districts to 21 in Dubai

The RTA has approved the use of e-scooters in 11 additional residential areas in Dubai beginning in the first quarter of 2023. All engineering and technical procedures have been completed, and traffic safety issues in the new areas have been verified in order to provide safer tracks for individual mobility users such as bikes and e-scooters.

The total number of districts where e-scooters are permitted to operate has increased to 21 with the addition of these 11 new residential areas. This has more than doubled the total length of bike tracks, increasing them from 185km to 390km. These routes include safe, shared internal roads for bikes and e-scooters throughout Dubai.

The RTA has converted over 200km of internal roads in Dubai into safe roads with various traffic safety measures. This includes lowering the speed limit from 40km/h to 30km/h and installing directional and cautionary signs to ensure safe mobility for all road users.

E-scooters are now authorized for use in 11 newly designated residential areas, including Al Tawar 1, Al Tawar 2, Umm Suqeim 3, Al Garhoud, Muhaisnah 3, Umm Hurair 1, Al Safa 2, Al Barsha South 2, Al Barsha 3, Al Quoz 4, and Al Qusais 3.

After obtaining a riding permit, the RTA has allowed individuals to ride e-scooters on safe roads. Around 50,000 permits have been issued since the electronic platform’s launch in April 2022. Several areas, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Internet City, Al Rigga, 2nd of December Street, Palm Jumeirah, and City Walk, were covered during the initial phase of e-scooter track construction.

Furthermore, specific zones at Al Qusais, Al Mankhool, and Al Karama had designated tracks and zones, in addition to dedicated tracks for bikes and e-scooters throughout Dubai, with the exception of the cycling tracks at Saih Assalam, Al Qudra, and Meydan. 

The primary goal of this phase is to provide these neighborhoods with facilities that serve their residents and provide them with easy access to public utilities such as mosques, public parks, and public transportation stations while using environmentally friendly methods.

Safety Measures And Awareness

The RTA has taken several steps to improve traffic safety in the new areas where e-scooters are permitted. This includes putting up ground markings, such as a red carpet, to alert motorists that e-scooters are permitted in the area. For riders of individual mobility means, traffic signs have also been installed to indicate the beginning and end of the safe track.

Speed signs have been modified, and traffic and cautionary signs have been installed to raise awareness of potential hazards. Directional signs have also been installed to guide riders to nearby public transportation stations. All of these measures are intended to promote the safe and responsible use of e-scooters in newly permitted areas.

Since the trial operation began in October 2020, RTA has conducted educational campaigns to raise awareness among e-scooter riders about traffic safety requirements, usage areas, and conditions. The authority recently increased its field efforts by deploying personnel to promote traffic awareness in popular e-scooter areas like Emaar Boulevard, Jumeirah Beach, Dubai Water Canal, and Jumeirah Lake Towers.

The campaigns emphasized the importance of following safety regulations, obtaining required permits, adhering to age restrictions, and adhering to speed limits while discouraging dangerous practices such as carrying more than one rider. Moreover, the RTA worked with over 40 e-scooter retailers to place QR code stickers with traffic safety instructions.

The RTA has announced a list of 21 traffic violations and their corresponding fines applicable to bikers in Dubai, including e-scooter riders, under Resolution No. 13 of 2022 from the Executive Council, which regulates the use of bicycles.

The fines range from Dh100 to Dh300 and can be viewed on the RTA website, along with the resolution and a complete list of the offenses. If anyone has grievances related to these violations, they may report them by email to [email protected] within 30 days of registering the violation.

The RTA reminds e-scooter riders to obey traffic laws and only use designated roads. They should also follow safety regulations, wear protective equipment, and make sure their scooter has lights when driving at night. To obtain a free e-scooter permit, the RTA recommends taking an online training course.
